Dual Servo Reducers Eliminate
Axis Backlash on Traveling Gantry
Customer's Problem
A
gantry mill manufacturer wanted to improve the positioning accuracy of
their existing rack & pinion drive. The backlash at the rack &
pinion caused inaccuracies while cutting material.
Atlanta's Solution
To solve the problem,
Atlanta offered two servo-worm reducers to drive each side of the
gantry. Each reducer was driven by its own motor and drove an
output pinion. A special motor controller controlled two motors at
a time, having one motor drive while the other lagged behind to preload
and remove the axis backlash, then switching to both motors driving
while the machine accelerated.
This drive system eliminated the total system backlash and gave the
machine great flexibility. By having the motors and reducer share
the load during acceleration, a smaller motor and reducer was used.
The high torsional and radial stiffness of the reducers further added to
the accuracy of the machine, and the backdrivability of the reducers
allowed the motors to sense the driven load.
In the end, the ultra-precise
positioning of the preloaded axis drive improved the accuracy of the
machine and the parts that it produced.
